The water content at which the soil changes from liquid state to plastic state is known as liquid limit.
Casagrande’s apparatus determines the liquid limit of soil. The device used in Casagrande’s method consists of a brass cup which drops through a height of 1 cm on a hard rubber base. The height of drop is adjusted with the help of adjusting screws. The Casagrande tool provided with the apparatus cuts a groove of size 2mm wide at the bottom 11.0mm wide at the top and 8mm high.
With reference to standard liquid limit device it is defined as the minimum water content at which part of soil cut by above groove will flow together for a distance of 10mm under an impact of 25 blows in the device.
