Horizontal Optical Dilatometer Misura ODLT for Non-Contact Thermo Mechanical Measurements

The horizontal optical dilatometer Misura® ODLT designed by Expert System Solutions was launched in the market after patenting in 2001. The Misura® ODLT is a non-contact tool that can be used for conducting thermo mechanical measurements. The measurements can be performed further than the softening point of a material across the complete industrial firing cycles (up to 1750°C on sample).

The Misura® ODLT comprises three main units mounted on an optical bench - an electric furnace with sample carriage, two beams of blue light, and an observation component with two digital cameras and a recording facility. The cameras capture images of the last few hundreds microns of all the sample tips with two beams of light simultaneously without any contact.

This dilatometer can handle small dimensional differences, thus making it a suitable tool for examining all materials that display reduced or considerable contractions and expansions. It is incomparable for the examination of thin materials without thickness limitations.

The tool is capable of precisely measuring the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), not only at temperatures at which materials display elastic behaviour, but also in viscous-elastic temperature area. In addition, plenty of information about advanced materials can be collected by this tool, thus making it easier to understand behaviour of these complex materials.

Key Features

The main features of the Misura® ODLT are as follows:
•        Determines expansion and shrinkage curve and dilatometric softening point
•        Establishes coefficient of thermal expansion and glass transition temperature
•        Optical technique helps to simplify preparation of sample pieces
•        Operates even in high temperatures of up to 1750°C on specimen with heating rates up to 30°C/min, testing materials beyond the softening point and imitate industrial firing cycles
•        Tool software automatically aligns optical paths to the ends of the sample
•        Dimensions of the sample do not need to be very precise
•        Absolute measurement is possible
