IA2 assay is used for the quantitative and qualitative detection of antibodies against human IA2 in human serum. Anti IA-2 antibodies are present in 50-70% of new-onset patients depending on age. Detection of anti-IA2 antibodies correlates with a rapid progression to diabetes. Positivity for IA-2 antibodies may be a more specific marker for beta cell destruction than antibodies against GAD-65 and occurs more infrequently in other autoimmune diseases.
