These tubes are used to sample small quantities of gas held over water like in photosynthesis or respiration experiments. Further, a bubble of gas is introduced into short limb. Then, it is lowered into a reagent solution and the bubble is moved back and forth so that the reagent diffuses through end water seal. The change in bubble length indicates the amount of gas, which is taken up by the reagent.
